Sense Of Humor

Nurses have a very strange sense of humor.  We have the ability to find the funny in just about everything.  I don’t know if I would classify it as a special skill… maybe more of a weird character trait or coping method.  Nurses laugh at the weirdest things.  We laugh at things that most people may not find funny at all. Sometimes it is very inappropriate and maybe even insensitive. So I apologize now for all the nurses… for our weird sense of humor.  But, you have to understand that we have to laugh.  No, we NEED to laugh!  Why? It is like a release… a stress release. It is sort of like the pressure value of a pressure cooker.

Nurses witness horrific tragedy, unimaginable gut wrenching grief, heartbreaking sadness, trauma and death. And it’s not just rarely or occasionally… it’s every day. It is the weird sense of humor and the ability to laugh that keeps us from going crazy… to keep us from curling up in a ball and crying every night.  It allows us to continue to do what we do.

So if you ask me… are the nurses sitting up at the nurse station laughing about the electric toothbrush stuck up my butt, or the time I was drunk and tried to hit on the nurse while peeing on her shoes, or the time the police brought me to the ER because they found me stumbling down the street, with a parrot on my shoulder, carrying my 40 pound cat and a shotgun, while screaming “I’m too sexy for my shirt”?
The short answer is YES!  The long answer is Yes we are!   LOL 😁
